Who did Leonardo da Vinci paint Salvator Mundi for?
- Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi may have been painted for Louis XII of France and his consort, Anne of Brittany. It was probably commissioned around 1500, shortly after Louis conquered the Duchy of Milan and took control of Genoa in the Second Italian War. Leonardo himself moved from Milan to Florence in 1500.
Who was in command of the da Vinci?
- In command was Ferdinando Calda. Navigating safely across her “home waters” of the Mediterranean, the da Vinci passed undetected by the British at the critical juncture at the Straight of Gibraltar on the 27th. She immediately began operations in the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.
Why did the Regia Marina deploy the Leonardo da Vinci?
- The Regia Marina deployed the Leonardo da Vinci and several of her sister ships to target this Allied trade route. Most of the initial Axis submarines sent to the Brazil-Antilles area to harass the Allied Merchant Fleet were Italian. The Germans were still ramping up the production of their newer, longer-ranged submarines.
What happened to the original Leonardo da Vinci painting?
- The original painting by Leonardo himself was thought to have been destroyed or lost in around 1603. In 1978, Joanne Snow-Smith argued that the copy located in the Marquis Jean-Louis de Ganay Collection, Paris, was the lost original, based on, among other things, its similarity to Saint John the Baptist.
